An individual member may be referred by a regional representative to a Group Legal Services Program (PSL) lawyer for advice and guidance on employment-related issues covered. Members can receive the following number of hours of legal advice on specific issues: The CTA`s legal department administers the GLS program. CTA employees work directly with the CTA`s Primary Contact (CPC) staff and represent sections in unfair practices and other matters filed with the Employment Public Relations Board; legal proceedings concerning workers` statutory rights; complex arbitration procedures to enforce CBAs; and legal advice on advocacy, organization and representation of chapters. The GLS program ensures that active CTA members can count on significant legal assistance when their employment throws balls at them. Each active member is entitled to a legal recommendation paid by the union for legal employment issues such as: We assist educators in a variety of other disputes, including wage issues, accommodation for people with disabilities, and classification disputes. For CTA members, we also offer free advice on other legal matters and discounted rates if you hire us. The funding of matters dealt with by the CTA is subject to certain limitations, depending on the nature of the case. The GLS program does not pay for legal representation on matters covered by the state`s workers` compensation system, but the CTA maintains a roster of highly respected workers` compensation lawyers who enjoy representing CTA members in workers` compensation cases. Participation in the GLSP begins with a member who contacts their UTLA regional representative and seeks legal advice on an issue covered by the program. This is a mandatory step for participation.
