Fort Leavenworth Legal Assistance Office

The Fort Leavenworth Legal Aid Office is only accepting telephone appointments this tax season for Gold Star families who qualify for legal assistance. Gold Star family members who need assistance can call 913-684-4944 to make an appointment. For otherwise eligible clients who are no longer on active duty but considered low-income, the Internal Revenue Service administers several voluntary income tax assistance programs. Catholic charities, the Leavenworth Public Library and the Leavenworth County Council on Aging are some of the organizations in the area that offer free tax services to those who qualify. Contact these organizations to determine eligibility for support. VITA`s website can be found at irs.gov/individuals/find-a-location-for-freetax-prep. The IRS said the statements will be released Jan. 24-18. April 2022.

For those who do not qualify for any of these programs, there are several professional tax preparation providers in the community who can assist with tax preparation. Fortunately, there are other services for active staff. Members can file their taxes through a free, easy-to-use program in www.militaryonesource.mil. Military OneSource also offers free access to accountants at 800342-9647 or via 24/7 online chat. To access resources on the Military OneSource website, click on the «Financial & Legal» link, select «Tax Resource Center», and then select the «MilTax: Tax Services for the Military» link. This free tax preparation software is available now until mid-October. Active employees are encouraged to use these free services to complete their tax return.
