How to Change Word Document to Legal Size
Page size and orientation are two of the most striking layout properties of a document. A message appears asking you to confirm the change. Click Yes. Open the Page Setup tab by clicking it on the ribbon. The location where you had your cursor will now appear on a new page with the new paper size. From the drop-down menu next to (or under) Paper Size, select the desired paper size from the available options. When you make a selection, the Word document on the screen changes to this size. For example, if you select US Legal from the menu, the document size changes to 8.5 x 14. The document preview on the screen adjusts to the selected paper size. You can change the paper size of a document to a new file or to an existing file. The size of Microsoft Word documents can be changed at any time for existing documents, regardless of their current size. For example, if you have a legal size document – 8.5″ x 14″ – but only letter size paper – 8.5″ x 11″ available for printing, reduce the document from legal size to letter. The content of the document remains the same, and after printing, you can change it back to the legal size. Click on the «Legal» drop-down menu under «Settings» and select «Letter».
The size of each page of the document now changes from Legal to Letter format. Since letter-size paper is smaller than legal-sized paper, the document contains more pages. Click the paper size you want to resize the document to. Click Other Paper Sizes at the bottom of the menu if you don`t see the correct size or want to resize it. Under Page Setup, select a format from the Paper Size list. On Mac and non-Microsoft 365 versions of Word, at the bottom of the list of paper size options, click Manage custom formats. For U.S. versions of Microsoft Word, the default paper size is 8.5 inches x 11 inches. While you probably print most of your letters, reports, and other documents on this paper size, changing the page size in Word to use paper in a different size is an easy task. Click the plus sign to add a new custom size. The fields are populated with the default dimensions that you will modify. A drop-down menu will appear where you will see a generous list of paper sizes.
Simply select an option from this list to change the paper size of the entire document. If you don`t see the size you want in the list, select Other Paper Sizes. The Paper tab of the Page Setup dialog box appears, allowing you to enter a custom paper size. Here, on the Paper tab of the Page Setup dialog box, under Paper Size, select the size you want. If you enter a paper size that the selected printer cannot run, the custom paper size name is grayed out in the Paper Size drop-down menu. In Word for Mac, you can select a predefined paper size from a list and change the paper size for all pages in your document, for a specific page, or for a specific section. You can also change the default paper size used for new documents. Click on the «Layout» tab, click on the «Size» drop-down menu and select «Legal» to restore the allowed size of the document when you are finished. To change the paper size of a Word file, open the document and go to the Page Setup group on the Page Setup tab. Click «Size» here. There may be times when you need to use two different paper sizes in the same Word document. You can easily achieve this in just a few steps. Enter the desired width and height (in inches) in the Width and Height boxes of the Paper Size section of the dialog box that opens. Click OK to apply resizing. If you select Manage custom formats from the list, you can define a custom paper size. Click the plus sign to create a new paper definition, and then enter the sizes for width, height, and non-printing area. Word 365 is slightly different. Set the paper size to Custom, and then set the various settings on the Paper, Margins, and Page Layout tabs.
Then click OK. Select a paper source for the first page of your document, and then for all subsequent pages. The list of available sources is provided by the printer driver on your computer and may differ from those displayed here. Word`s default paper size is «letter,» which is equivalent to 8.5 x 11 inches. If you frequently use a size other than the default, you can change the default size of all new documents. This way, you don`t need to change the paper size of every new document you create. If the desired size does not appear in the drop-down menu, set a specific size. Select Other or the name you gave the custom format from the Paper Size drop-down menu.

Note If you change the paper size or preferred margins for the template on which Word bases the new documents (normal.dotm), all future documents that use the normal.dotm template will use the new settings. If you change the preferred paper size or margins for a document based on a different template, only new documents based on that template use the new settings. When you create a new document, Word applies the default paper size and margins that are stored in a template (normal.dotm). If you frequently use a paper size that is different from the default size (for example, US Legal), you can set new default settings that Word uses when creating a document. If your current document is configured with the margins you want, you can use that document to set the new default margins. Word does not limit the size or orientation of the page. Chances are your printer has greater restrictions on the paper it uses than Word, so you should check the printer documentation before making any changes to the page size. This can save you a lot of frustration in the long run.
Highlight Unnamed in the list of custom sizes and replace the name with something you can remember or recognize by tapping on it. First, make sure the cursor is where you want the new paper size to start. If it`s in the middle of a page, it will simply move it to a new page after selecting the new size. Click OK to close the Page Setup dialog box. The next time you open Word, the paper size is the one you just selected. When you have selected the paper size, click OK.
