No one wants less power; Everyone wants more. In today`s world, however, it is dangerous to appear too power-hungry to be open about one`s power movements. We must appear fair and decent. So we must be subtly sympathetic and yet cunning, democratic and yet devious. I would like to thank Henri Le Goubin who has provided me with many Machiavellian anecdotes over the years, especially about the many French characters who play such an important role in this book. He grew up in the United States and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a B.A. in classics. Robert held 60 jobs before becoming an author, The 48 Laws of Power was the author`s first book, published in 1998. Half of the game is about learning to forget the events of the past that devour you and cloud your reason. The real purpose of the retrospective eye is to constantly educate you – you look to the past to learn from those who came before you. Law 44: Disarm and Get Angry at the Mirror EffectThe mirror reflects reality, but it is also the perfect tool to deceive: if you mirror your enemies and do exactly what they do, they will not be able to understand your strategy. The mirror effect mocks them, humiliates them and makes them overreact. By holding up a mirror to their psyche, you seduce them with the illusion that you share their values; By holding up a mirror to their actions, you are teaching them a lesson.

Few people can resist the power of the mirror effect. For some people, the idea of consciously playing power games – no matter how indirect – seems bad, antisocial, a relic of the past. They believe they can get out of the game behaving in a way that has nothing to do with power. You should be wary of these people, because although they express such opinions to the outside world, they are often among the most skillful actors in power. They use strategies that skillfully conceal the nature of the manipulation involved. These guys, for example, often show their weakness and lack of power as a kind of moral virtue. But true impotence, without any motive of self-interest, would not make its weakness public to gain sympathy or respect. Displaying weakness is indeed a very effective, subtle and misleading strategy in the game of power (see Bill 22, the tactic of surrender).

Law 34: Be Royal in Your Way: Act Like a King to Be Treated as OneThe way you behave will often determine how you are treated: In the long run, appearing vulgar or ordinary will cause people to disrespect you. Because a king respects himself and awakens the same feeling in others. By acting like a king and being sure of your powers, you make yourself look destined to wear a crown. You start by looking at the mistakes you`ve made in the past, the ones that have held you back the most. You analyze them according to the 48 laws of power and extract from them a lesson and an oath: «I will never repeat such a mistake; I will never fall into such a trap again. If you can evaluate and observe yourself in this way, you can learn to break patterns from the past – an extremely valuable skill. Law 41: Avoid following in the footsteps of a great manWhat happens first always seems better and more original than what comes after. If you follow a great man or have a famous relative, you will have to perform twice as well to put them in the shade. Don`t get lost in their shadow or get stuck in a past you didn`t inflict on yourself: establish your own name and identity by changing course.

Kill the arrogant father, denigrate his inheritance, and gain power by shining in your own way. Galileo developed a new strategy in 1610 when he discovered Jupiter`s moons. Instead of dividing the discovery among his patrons – giving one the telescope he had used, dedicating one book to another, etc. – as he had done in the past, he decided to focus exclusively on the Medici. He chose the Medici for a reason: shortly after Cosimo I founded the Medici dynasty in 1540, he had made Jupiter, the mightiest of the gods, the symbol of the Medici – a symbol of a power that transcended politics and banking and was linked to ancient Rome and its deities. Most people are open books. They say how they feel, express their opinions at every opportunity, and constantly reveal their plans and intentions. They do so for several reasons. First of all, it`s easy and natural to always want to talk about your feelings and plans for the future. It takes effort to control your language and monitor what you reveal. Secondly, many believe that through honesty and openness, they win people`s hearts and show their good nature.

They are very deceived. Honesty is actually a blunt instrument that makes it bloodier than it cuts. Your honesty is likely to offend people; It`s much wiser to adjust your words and tell people what they want to hear than the crude, ugly truth of what you feel or think. Most importantly, through your shameless openness, you make yourself so predictable and familiar that it`s almost impossible to respect or fear yourself, and a person who can`t inspire such emotions won`t gain power. Law 27: Play on people`s need to believe in order to create a cultPeople have an irresistible desire to believe in something. Become the focal point of such a desire by offering them one thing, a new faith to follow. Keep your words vague but full of promise; Focus on enthusiasm for rationality and clear thinking. Give your new students rituals they can perform, ask them to make sacrifices for you. In the absence of organized religion and great concerns, your new belief system will bring you immeasurable power. Half of your control of power comes from what you don`t do, what you don`t let yourself be lured into.

For this skill, you must learn to judge all things by what they cost you. As Nietzsche wrote, «The value of a thing sometimes lies not in what we achieve with it, but in what we pay for it—what it costs us.» Perhaps you will achieve your goal, and a laudable goal, but at what cost? Apply this standard to everything, including whether you need to work with or help others. At the end of the day, life is short, opportunities are slim, and you don`t have much energy to rely on. And in that sense, time is as important a consideration as any other. Never waste valuable time or mental peace of mind on other people`s affairs – it`s too high a price. Law 40: Despise Free LunchWhat is offered for free is dangerous – it is usually either a ruse or a hidden obligation. What`s worth it is worth paying for. By paying your way, you stay away from gratitude, guilt, and deception. It is also often advisable to pay a high price – there is no compromise with excellence. Waste your money and keep it in circulation, because generosity is a sign and a magnet for power.

Law 23: Concentrate Your PowersMaintain your powers and energies by keeping them focused at their strongest point.
