Legal Services of North Dakota is a beneficiary of the Legal Services Corporation and therefore provides free legal aid to low-income or elderly individuals. North Dakota Legal Services does NOT bill clients for legal services. If you have received a request for payment for legal services or a request for transfer of payment, please contact North Dakota Legal Services directly and DO NOT send payment. Visit the U.S. Armed Forces Legal Assistance Locator to find your nearest military legal aid office (click «Advanced» and «Accept»). Military personnel and their families can access free legal assistance at these offices. More information on eligibility can be found in our Working with a Lawyer publication. ABA Free Legal Answers If you can`t afford to pay for a lawyer, ABA Free Legal Answers can help. For most civil (non-criminal) legal matters, if your state participates, click «Choose the state you live in» and click on your state to ask a question. For VA benefits, release upgrades, or other legal issues related to veterans: Select «ABA Federal» from the «Select the state you live in» drop-down menu to ask a question related to the release upgrade or VA and receive a response from an attorney. Legal Services of North Dakota (LSND) provides free civil legal assistance to low-income and elderly individuals. LSND`s mission is to protect and enhance the civil rights of North Dakota residents living in poverty and to promote systemic change. Individual lawyers can volunteer to work through one of the state`s four legal aid firms: Bismarck, Minot, Fargo and Belcourt. The program will match your content interests with the types of cases they relate to. Your name will then be added to a rotating list of recommendations. While there is the greatest need for direct representation, particularly in housing and family law cases, participation in other causes and roles is entirely possible. You can choose to assist as co-counsel in an important case or simply provide advice or training in your area of expertise.
LSND aims to increase the education and participation of the pro bono bar and community members in serving low-income customers.
