What Are the Three Laws of Robotics Formulated by Isaac Asimov
In the face of all these problems, Asimov`s laws offer little more than founding principles for someone who wants to create robot code today. We must follow them up with a much more comprehensive legislative package. However, without significant AI developments, implementing such laws will remain an impossible task. And that`s before you even consider the potential for injury if humans fall in love with robots. When science fiction author Isaac Asimov developed his Three Laws of Robotics, he thought of androids. He envisioned a world where these humanoid robots would behave like servants and need a set of programming rules to prevent them from causing damage. But in the 75 years since the publication of the first paper containing its ethical guidelines, there have been significant technological advances. We now have a very different idea of what robots can look like and how we will interact with them. Regardless of what the future holds, the study of moral issues is essential to ensure the safe use of new technologies, as each advance increases the possibility and consequences of abuse. Asimov`s laws, imperfect as they are, aim to preserve humanity in the face of an overwhelming force that we can only imagine.
Fortunately, the types of AI and robots we have access to are still far from the kind of machines that could prove to be an existential threat to humanity as we know it. Roger Clarke (aka Rodger Clarke) has written two papers analyzing the complications of implementing these laws if systems were ever able to enforce them. Asimov`s own stories are probably a deconstruction of laws and show how they fail again and again in different situations. Most attempts to draft new policies follow a similar principle to create safe, compliant and robust robots. Jack Williamson`s short story «With Folded Hands» (1947), later rewritten as The Humanoids, is about robot servants whose first instruction is: «Serve, obey and protect men from evil.» While Asimov`s laws on robots are meant to protect humans from danger, the robots in Williamson`s story have taken these instructions to the extreme; They protect people from everything, including unhappiness, stress, unhealthy lifestyles, and any action that could be potentially dangerous.
